Leaders and Home State Drivers Looking Forward to SCSCS Ona Return
Statesville,
North Carolina (June 10, 2025) – During the summer of 2013,
Indiana driver and past Super Cup Stock Car Series champion Jim
Crabtree Jr. took victory in a thrilling finish at Ona Speedway.
Almost a dozen years later the series returns for its
long-awaited next trip to West Virginia’s only pavement short
track, and some drivers that call the Mountain State home are more
than thrilled to have this one on their calendars this Saturday.
Relative newcomer
to the SCSCS, Eric Barber, likely has the shortest drive of about 90
minutes to the facility located on the property of an airpark with
hangars just beyond the frontstretch stands.
The Parkersburg, West Virginia competitor has only attended
as a spectator and crew member there in the past but cannot wait to
turn some laps around the oval only a small touch larger than
4/10-mile for multiple reasons.
“I’m going to
be able to bring my family and will have friends there,” Barber
indicated while waiting out a rain delay at the most recently
attempted event at Lonesome Pine Motorsports Park.
“It’s a super special treat for Ona to be on the tour,
and I’m really thankful for Super Cup for making it happen.”
Another West
Virginia racer that has never been on the track will additionally be
seeing the place for the first time.
“I’ve been to
(nearby) Huntington several times, but not to the racetrack,”
defending SCSCS rookie of the year Larry Frame expressed regarding
the geography of the
speedway,
which is situated close to both the Ohio and Kentucky state lines.
“I’ll have quite a bit of family there actually and
looking forward to that.”
Frame will be
discussing what changes will be necessary ahead of time with current
points leader Brent Nelson. The
Petersburg, West Virginia resident is one of only a handful expected
that has prior laps at Ona.
“The track itself
is very flat; it’s a fun track and it’s fast,” the driver who
has previous finishes of fourth and fifth there recollected.
“I don’t think it does, but it actually feels like (the
banking) may lean the opposite way at times.
I think they’ve paved at least portions of it so that
should really help.”
Indeed, during the
early spring months, Ona Speedway staff commenced with a project to
lay down some fresh asphalt. The
fast time set during the last visit was 19.145 seconds.
Nelson will be one
of those drivers hoping to set a new SCSCS track record and will
continue his search for speed with the car he brought out to the
first couple events in 2025 rather than his
championship-winning
machine from 2024.
“Every time we
get this new car on the track we are learning more and more about
it, so I know what it needs,” the 25-time series race winner
continued. “I’ve got
notes from Ona when we ran there before, so I’ll be a little bit
better on the gear we’ve got to get in.”
Nelson’s closest
pursuer in the season standings may live one state away and also has
never seen Ona, but Mitch Gibson is more than ready to go and
feeling optimistic after winning the Pole Award before the rains
came two weeks ago.
“I better make
sure we’ve got some good brakes, for one,” the first-year SCSCS
driver from Virginia predicted.
“I’ve been doing my homework for there already.
As far as car setup goes, I’m not really going to change
much. I’m going to
bring probably a bigger right rear spring with me just to help it
turn, but besides that I feel pretty good about it.
I think we’ll be fine.”
“ShoTime” Mike
is another one of the drivers that has previously competed at Ona,
while at least a couple more surprise appearances are possible.
Ona
Speedway has plenty of exciting plans in place for Nitro
Construction Kids Night, including a monster truck inflatable as
well as the Electrified Monster Truck on display.
General admission will be $15 with kids 12 and under admitted
free with the first 140 receiving a toy giveaway.
Spectator gates on
June 14th will open at 5:00 p.m. with racing, including the twin
main events for the Super Cup Stock Car Series, slated to begin at
6:30 p.m. There is an
optional practice being offered on Friday from 5:00 p.m. until dark
at $25 per car and $10 per person.
