Highbanks
of Franklin County Speedway Greet SCSCS for Ridgerunner Classic
Statesville,
North Carolina (June 19, 2024) – In June of 2023, the Super
Cup Stock Car Series made its return to Franklin County Speedway
after a 12-year hiatus. Some
intense side by side battling for positions among racers ensued with
2021 series champion Ben Ebeling capturing both checkered flags.
The 2024 running,
being dubbed the Ridgerunner Classic, marks the only competition
this year for the series officially under the summer sun.
This means drivers will be looking to capitalize on a chance
at two more wins before taking a break during the July and August
months.
The interesting
part is that the duo of drivers who have visited victory lane so far
this year do not have many laps of experience at Franklin County.
The most recent winner only made it a handful of times around
the 3/8-mile high-banked oval in 2023 but is coming into the weekend
with positive thoughts.
“Blew
a motor there last year in practice, so I’ve never turned a racing
lap on that track,” Brent Nelson, from Petersburg, West Virginia,
explained. “They tell
me it’s got a lot of grip, it’s an old wore out track, but I’m
looking forward to seeing what we can do there.”
Uniontown,
Pennsylvania’s Bill Ashton has a few more circuits under his belt,
but last year’s event was his first occasion seeing the facility.
After winning earlier in the month for the first time in
nearly eight years, the veteran racer who began competing in the
series in 2014 has some mixed feelings on how to approach what he
will need to do in order to improve upon a pair of fourth place
finishes.
“I
don’t know,” Ashton indicated when immediately following the
most recent event. “I
just hope that we have another good night down there.
Momentum is a good thing.”
Some of the
competitors that were in attendance at Shenandoah Speedway a few
weeks back will look to narrow the margin to the two early
frontrunners as well as a few additional challengers making their
season debut when trailers roll their way into Callaway, Virigina
this Saturday.
Festivities begin
with grandstand gates opening at 5 p.m. and racing at 7 p.m. Also
featured during the evening program will be twin races for the local
Legends cars and Stock4 class, plus a kid’s bike race and
spectator drag racing promotions and a main event for the local Mini
Stock division all for the admission of $15.
