SCSCS Field Expected for Shenandoah Speedway Veterans Classic
Statesville,
North Carolina (May 28, 2019) – An impressive assembly of competitors
have been anticipating the arrival of the Super Cup Stock Car Series return to
Shenandoah Speedway ever since the Saturday, June 1 Veterans Classic date was
announced. The months and weeks
have now dwindled to days as the first visit since 2013 to the 3/8-mile oval
nestled amidst the picturesque Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia is now upon
them.
Riding perhaps the most
momentum in his more than decade-spanning SCSCS career is Kevin Kromer.
Fresh off an evening sweep of the third and fourth races of 2019 at
North Carolina’s Southern National Motorsports Park, the Walnutport,
Pennsylvania racer has a quartet of previous starts at Shenandoah with a best
finish of third the last time there.
The active driver with the
best average finish is Denver, North Carolina’s Larry Wilcox.
10 years ago, the SCSCS visited the speedway which opened in 2005 on two
occasions with a total of three races. During
the doubleheader that August, he achieved a career best to-date runner-up and a
third place result.
 Saturday’s
event will feature twin 50-lap races.
Although there is the strong
potential for the presence of more drivers with prior SCSCS experience at the
track, only one other confirmed at the time of release has made an appearance
before. Brent Nelson will be ready
to make a maiden voyage with something different from his Petersburg, West
Virginia stable after sitting out the event two weeks ago due to a crash
suffered at Dominion Raceway. The
eight-time series winner recorded a fifth place accomplishment on that
aforementioned April night in 2013.
The remainder will be stepping
behind the wheel for their first SCSCS instance at Shenandoah.
From North Carolina, Ben Ebeling is scheduled to make his 2019 debut
after an incredible 2018 record that included four race wins.
Jon Kerley and Marc Jones join Ebeling from the Tar Heel State, and have
each achieved a top five finish so far in 2019.
Pennsylvania always comes
through with a solid contingent and Saturday will be no different.
Series rookies Quincy Sponseller, Hayden Brothers, Landon Brothers,
Andrew Kostelnik, and Lauren Butler will join former rookie award winners Bill
Ashton and Jerod Brougher in the field. The
latter two have each earned podium results in 2019.
While three states only have
one representative, each will likely be mixing it up among the best.
Johnson City, Tennessee’s Mike Potter is the current Southern Division
point leader while Freeport, New York’s Ron Langdon is leading the overall
championship standings. Miami,
Florida’s John Miller has shown speed throughout the 2019 season and could be
right in the hunt as well.
North, South, and Overall
points will each be awarded for Saturday’s event.
Getting closer to the hometown
crowd, first to West Virginia, Larry Berg will hope some expertise from his
grandson Codie Rohrbaugh will brush off for a successful outing.
Rohrbaugh made his series debut at Shenandoah in April 2013, staying out
of trouble for a fourth place outcome.
Home state drivers will
consist of 2014 series champion JJ Pack and rookie Edward Adams III.
Both will look to give the locals something to applaud about.
Pack has two prior starts at Shenandoah with the former Pro Cup series.
For those looking forward to
being at the track on race day, first SCSCS practice begins at 2:00 p.m. with
qualifying taking place at approximately 4:20 p.m.
The first of the Veterans Classic Twin 50s at Shenandoah Speedway is
scheduled to take the green flag at 7:00 p.m.
A lucrative 50-lap Legends race, USAC Eastern Midgets, Bandoleros, and
local Sportsman cars will add to what will be an incredible night of racing.
Opening ceremonies will
include commemoration of the 75th anniversary of the Normandy landings.
The first 300 fans in attendance will receive a military flag.
Three dollars from every ticket sold will be donated to three veterans
charities in the region. Active
military, wounded warriors, and first responders will be admitted free.
An optional practice session
will be offered to teams on Friday from 3 p.m. until dark as well.
