Super Cup Returns to ‘The Pine’ After Six Year Layoff

Mount Joy, Pennsylvania (August 2, 2016) – Almost to the day of their last appearance in 2010, the Super Cup Stock Car Series makes a comeback to Lonesome Pine Raceway this Saturday for the Performance Fiberglass Products 75 presented by Extreme Awards and Personalization.  So far 2016 has witnessed four unique race winners in as many races plus three different pole award recipients, and the upcoming event in Southwest Virginia is anticipated to continue such a competitive streak.

Multiple drivers that competed at the time six years ago will be back to contend for the victory in the fifth race of this season.  Brent Nelson currently leads the standings by only eight points and hopes that his previous start, which was a top five result, will be a boost as the year winds down.

“It’s a great and fast track with good high banks, and it will be a fun race,” Nelson noted.

The Petersburg, West Viriginia driver was involved in quite the fierce wreck last time out at Jennerstown, Pennsylvania.  Nevertheless, that has not slowed down the race winner from the Midvale, Ohio event which started off the season.

“Once we got back home and checked the car out the damage was not as bad as it looked,” Nelson added.  “We had to install the window net, lower mounting frame, and the top door support, and repaired the battery box and left rear wheel well.  Believe it or not, I beat out the sheet metal and rolled it on the English wheel and it doesn't look too bad.  If all goes as planned I will be bringing the same car to Lonesome Pine.  If not, the backup is ready to go with a gear change and scale check.”

Harvey Harrison sits second in points, and enters as the only former winner on the 3/8-mile competing this weekend.

“We look forward to going to Lonesome Pine,” Harrison said about the track on the schedule that is closest in distance to the family’s West Virginia home.  “We’re going to have a blast.”

Joining the top two drivers in points, Mike Kurkowski, Brian and Brandon Harrison, and Larry Wilcox will come in with prior experience at the track nestled about 150 miles northeast of the Great Smoky Mountains.  Kurkowski competed there as far back as a few decades ago and finished fourth in the most recent SCSCS appearance.

“It’s one of my favorite places to race,” Kurkowski, who will also be fielding a second car for his grandson Nathan’s stock car debut, mentioned.  “My first time there was in the mid-80s with ASA and we ran well.  I’ve liked it ever since then.”

Third in points Jeff Zillweger is one of several that have never seen the facility in person before.

“I’ve been looking at pictures on the internet, but I’m pretty good at adjusting to some new tracks,” an optimistic Zillweger said.

Series regulars Brian Kaltreider, Jason Schue, Bill Ashton, and Trent Gossar are among those that will try their hand at ‘The Pine’ for the first time.

In addition, Stephen Cox will be back to contend.  The Rohrbaugh Racing driver last competed at the season opening event, achieving a pole award and second place finish after leading the most laps.  Another runner-up finisher this season, Tim McLaughlin, returns following a strong showing at Columbus Motor Speedway in June.

An hour practice will kick things off at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday.  Grandstands will open at 4:00 p.m., in time for another brief session shortly after the top of the hour.  Qualifying for all divisions begins at 6:00 p.m. with racing starting at 7:00 p.m.
