Todd
Peck and More Super Cup Stock Car Series Drivers Get a Head Start on
the 2014 Season
Skyland,
North Carolina (March 6, 2014) – Although the first race for
the Super Cup Stock Car Series isn’t until Easter weekend at
Hickory Motor Speedway, a handful of drivers and teams had a
presence at Florida Speedweeks throughout the month of February.
2013
series champion Todd Peck was at the World Center of Racing, Daytona
International Speedway, prepared to make his debut on the 2.5 mile
superspeedway in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series.
The team tested in January at the facility, but it definitely
wasn’t an easy journey to make it back in time a month later from
the Peck Motorsports headquarters in Hanover, Pennsylvania.
“It’s
been a thrash with all the weather,” Peck said.
Their
shop was without power for five days after an ice storm and a
significant amount of snow accumulated on top of the team’s
hauler. In
addition, the truck they had was new to them and had to align with
the new bodies mandated for the series on speedways for 2014.
Nevertheless, they made it to Florida in time for a local
Monday morning news appearance spreading awareness for the Arthritis
Foundation.
From
there, the truck made it onto the track for practice and focus was
set on the group qualifying format that the series was using for the
first time.
Although highly confident, Peck said prior to the scheduled
session that no matter the result they were proud to be there.
“It’s
like striking out at Yankee Stadium,” Peck said about competing at
such a prestigious facility even if things didn’t go their way.
Unfortunately,
Peck didn’t even get a chance to take an at-bat as rain forced the
cancellation of qualifying.
The team didn’t have enough owner points that carried over
from the previous year and was sent home early.
The
team is considering running additional races throughout the season;
however, priority now shifts to building a car for their Super Cup
effort.
“I’m
on a mission for Hickory,” Peck said regarding the historic track.
Peck
has run toward the front at the North Carolina oval, but would like
nothing more than to claim a win after two DNFs and one second place
finish in previous Super Cup starts there.
Last
year’s June Motordrome winner JJ Pack was also down in Florida at
Auburndale Speedway for the Legends Car Winter Nationals.
JJ drove in the Pro division, but focus was on getting wife
Tasha some seat time in the Semi-Pro division.
After all was said and done, the car came back in one piece
as Tasha plans to run in some more events throughout the season.
In addition, JJ has purchased a Late Model Stock Car and also
hopes to make a bid for the championship in Super Cup this year.
JJ returns to Cal Richardson’s team, in which the group
never finished worse than third in the four races they started in
2013.
Additionally,
2013 competitors Derrick Layne and Brent Cross were on hand in the
sunshine state.
Layne assisted as tire specialist for one of the Pro Late
Model teams and a NASCAR K&N East Series team during the World
Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing held at New Smyrna Speedway, and
is working with team owner Don Gnat to return behind the wheel for
the Hickory season opener.
Cross
brought his ARCA Racing Series car down from New York, but was the
odd man out after qualifying concluded and following a transmission
change was not fast enough to make the field.
The Team LaCross Motorsports bunch is preparing for a Super
Cup schedule with series newcomer Mike Senica.
Overall
the result turned out to be a bit of a struggle for the Super Cup
representatives; however, with everything they learned some notes
could perhaps translate to a successful 2014.
